Betty Marie Swicegood, 82, of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, passed away on December 1, 2016.
A Celebration of Life memorial will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, December 10th at Vision Church/Christian International, 5200 Highway 98 E., Santa Rosa Beach, Florida.
Betty was born in Vivian, La. to George and Marie Powell on January 14, 1934. She married Joe Swicegood on February 1, 1951 in Wichita, Ks. In the early 60's Betty, Joe, and their four children settled in the small mining town of San Manuel, Az. where they became an integral part of the town and surrounding communities. Betty and Joe owned the Farmers Insurance Agency in San Manuel until their retirement in 1996.
The early years of retirement found Betty and Joe exploring the country with their travel trailer in tow. They made the round trip to Alaska and back as well as across the country. Along the way they visited friends and family, including the young foreign students and refugees that they had hosted in their San Manuel home over a number of years. One of those students acted as their guide when Betty and Joe toured parts of Europe. They were also blessed to be able to fulfill their lifelong desire to visit the Holy Land.
Wanderlust satisfied, Betty and Joe made their way to Santa Rosa Beach, Florida to study, work and worship at Christian International under the tutelage of their dear friend, Dr. Bill Hamon, and his wife, Evelyn. Betty earned her Bachelor of Theology degree at Christian International College and became a Christian counselor. Together with Joe, she founded Transform Lives ministry. Through that work Betty was able to bring hope and healing to a great number of people.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents and by her son, Joe Jr. (Butch).
Betty is survived by her husband, Joe, son, Steve and daughters, Laura Kingston and Barbara Pierson. Also surviving are siblings James Powell, Mary Nell Fisher, Vera Denney, and Danny Ray Powell, along with eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider a gift in Betty's honor to Destin United Methodist Church, 200 Beach Dr, Destin, FL 32541, or Vision Church/Christian International, 5200 Highway 98 E., Santa Rosa Beach, Florida 32459, or to your favorite ministry.
