Betty Bronson Moose Johnson died February 9, 2017 at Superior Residences in Niceville after an 11 year journey with dementia. She was born January 11, 1924 in Charlotte, North Carolina and was the youngest child of Thomas C. and Lucy A. Moose. She survived her husband, Leon Pate Johnson and her three siblings, Sarah M. Greenway, Thomas C. Moose and Lucy A. Moose. She grew up in Charlotte, where she learned her love of fashion from her father who owned an exclusive dress shop. After high school, she worked for Southern Bell and the Red Cross. She met her husband, Pate Johnson in Charlotte and they married there in 1949. As the wife of an Army officer, she enjoyed the travels that took them to Georgia, Texas, Japan, Florida and two tours in Germany. She and Pate moved their family back to Fort Walton Beach in 1971. Throughout her life she had a strong faith and was actively involved at Shalimar United Methodist Church serving on many committees including the local and District Board of Trustees, two terms as President of the United Methodist Women and children's Sunday School teacher. Many of the receptions at the church benefited from her gift of hospitality and love of beauty. Her heart for service was felt at her children's schools, in her neighborhood, the Officer's Wives Club, Meals on Wheels, the Red Cross, Sharing and Caring and the Waterfront Mission. She had a fun and adventurous spirit and a love of travel and new experiences (fencing lessons in Germany!). She always said her middle name was "Go and Do!' Every day brought places to go and people to see. She loved spending time outdoors, especially swimming in her beloved pool, feeding the birds in her yard, trips to the beach, playing bridge with her friends and checking out the latest sales.
Her best role was our Mother. She is survived by her three children, Mary Jane Robertson of Shalimar, Florida, Michael Eric of Golden, Colorado and Margaret Ann of Chantilly, Virginia. Services will be held at Shalimar United Methodist Church at 10:00 a.m. Monday, February 13, 2017 with the Reverend Philip McVay, Senior Pastor at SUMC and the Reverend Ralph Molyneux , Emerald Coast Hospice Chaplain officiating. Burial will follow at Beal Memorial Cemetery.
The family would like to thank Emerald Coast Hospice for their outstanding and compassionate care of our Mother and a special thank you to her Blessed Assurance caregivers who gave her life dignity in her final years. Thank you to Keke, LaWanda, Cherise, Stephanie, Amy, Gertrude, LaToya, Carrie, Michelle, and Metta. No matter the circumstances in her life, Mother's graciousness and appreciation for anything done for her never wavered.
The family requests memorials be made to Shalimar United Methodist Church or Emerald Coast Hospice, 550 West Redstone Ave, #310, Crestview, FL 32536. Emerald Coast Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
